There’s no doubt about it, we live in a changing world. Our society is increasingly polarized and fragmented.A comprehensive study, completed in September by the Pew Research Center, bears this out.It notes: “There is widespread criticism of the three branches of government, both political parties, as well as political leaders and candidates for office.”Only 16% of the American adults surveyed said they trust the government in Washington to do the right thing “just about always or most of the time.” This measure is among the lowest in more than 70 years of polling. As most of us are aware, our world is currently facing numerous daunting challenges.Among them are climate change, massive migrant shifts, fear of life-threatening diseases, gun violence, death from opioid abuse and suicide, and the horrors of war. Many today say that “thoughts and prayers” are unable to combat these types of issues because they don’t bring about solutions that are readily visible.Yet these problems persist, and appear to be beyond fixing. Relying on government or exceptional individuals to guide and protect us has not brought much progress either. This has eroded trust in both individuals and organizations. We see dissatisfaction, despair, feelings of oppression, exploitation and a lack of hope and individual agency. Is there anything we can trust to provide reliable answers? In my own experience as a lifelong adherent of the teachings of the Christian Science faith, I have found peace, guidance and healing.Quietly praying and listening to God, the Creator of the universe, and following as best I can the example of Christ Jesus, have brought answers I can trust.Christian Science is unique in showing that human wisdom and action fail us until we learn that all right action, intelligence, integrity, honesty and true wisdom have their source in God — an all-powerful, ever-present, always active and infinitely intelligent spirit. When we discover God’s love and care for us, we can confidently turn to this divine presence and find our lives transformed and healed. Our families, communities and the whole world benefit, too.We just happen to have someone coming to Natick to give a talk on this.Lesley Pitts, an international speaker and professional practitioner of Christian Science, will present her free talk, “Finding trust in a changing world.” It takes place at 3 p.m.on Saturday, Nov.4, at the Morse Institute Library, 14 East Central St.(Route 135) in downtown Natick. This talk is hosted by First Church of Christ, Scientist, Natick. For more information, call 508-651-1689, or visit CSChurchNatick.com.Sharing examples from her own life, Pitts says that generations of her family came to rely on the divine presence for all their daily needs — whether employment, finding a home or dealing with serious illness. It brought cure to her grandmother and herself when they were faced with physical challenges. In her talk, Pitts will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific, meaning that people can prove its effectiveness for themselves. This is fully described in the book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," written by the founder of the Christian Science movement, Mary Baker Eddy.Pitts will also touch on the life of its founder, who came to understand, confirm and teach what she felt was original Christian healing.Linda K.Herring lives in Ashland.FacebookTwitterEmail
