By Letters to the editor | The OregonianI live in Canby, I parent children in the school district and I attended several Canby School Board meetings, where I spoke in opposition to book challenges in the district, (“After complaints about 36 books, Canby School District bans just 1,” Oct.17).After learning of the list of 36, I began reading them, so I could speak from a place of knowledge instead of fear.I have read 31 so far.I have several concerns about the way the complaints were handled. One such issue continues to be the lack of transparency in the process the district used. With this process, two residents could remove 36 books from school libraries in the middle of the school year with no more than a personal opinion. With this process, parents, school administrators, teachers and others were essentially placed in a lottery to devise who could read and place judgment on these 36 books. With this process, the books were either recommended for continued use or recommended for removal. As a local voice, I do not agree with the process, and I do not agree with the outcome.Books should not be banned.I am a strong proponent of the freedom to read, and I believe that censorship can often be a breeding ground for silencing minority authors or stories outside the mainstream.Kristi Smith, CanbyTo read more letters to the editor, go to oregonlive.com/opinion.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
